
Verzyl Earns All-American Status on Day Two of NCAAs
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The South Carolina women’s swimming & diving team completed the first full day of individual events at the NCAA Championships.
Breckin Gormley finished 42nd overall in the 500 freestyle after clocking a 4:43.16 followed by Nora Fluck (4:45.92) and Madison Kolessar (4:47.01).
Delaney Franklin swam a 2:00.80 in the 200 IM. Peyton Curry clocked a 22.24 in the 50 free to finish in the top 40.
Sophie Verzyl took 11th place in the 1-meter prelims after scoring 295.30 to book a spot in the consolation finals. The junior turned it up a notch in the finals, improving by 48.35 points and moving up two spots to finish in ninth overall with a season best 343.65. After finishing in the top 16 in the NCAA in her event, Verzyl earned an All-American honorable mention. Additionally, her score would’ve placed her second overall in the championship final.
The 200 free relay of Curry, Dylan Scholes, Ellery Ottem and Amy Riordan clocked a 1:29.51 in finals to wrap up day two action.
Day three of the NCAA Championships continue tomorrow with prelims starting at 1:00 p.m. (ET). The Gamecocks will be competing in the 100 fly, 400 IM, 100 backstroke, 3-meter and the 400 medley relay.
