Thank you Seniors!
Prior to the running events on Saturday, the Gamecocks will be honoring the 19 seniors for this year’s class at 11 a.m. The seniors are (alphabetically): Rogerio Amaral, Jalen Clark, Noah Contreras, Brooke Donoghue, Channing Ferguson, Anthony Greenhow, Aidan Hatton, Jayla Jamison, Prescott Jefferson, CJ Licata, Ethan Mathis, Imani Rivas, Cailyn Scharneck, Emma Stone, Dylan Targgart, Rachel Valentine, Lily Weeks, Ally Wilson and Ella Zeigler.
Long Overdue
On Thursday afternoon, long-time Gamecock Throws Coach Mike Sergent was named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men’s Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year. This was the first honor in Sergent’s career as he coached a pair of shot put throwers to First Team All-American honors after finishing second and fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
Indoor Recap
The Gamecock women finished tied for 18th at the NCAA Indoor Championship, while the men concluded the championship in a tie for 21st overall. On the men’s side, it was CJ Licata and Dylan Targgart who scored 13 points for the Gamecocks with a runner-up finish and a fourth-place finish in the men’s shot put to earn First Team All-American nods. The duo became the first pair of Gamecocks to score in the men’s shot put during the same NCAA Indoor Championship. The women scored 12 points overall, led by a bronze medal finish in the 200m by JaMeesia Ford and then a fifth-place finish in the women’s high jump from Cheyla Scott. Zaya Akins added to the mix, finishing seventh overall in the women’s 400m.
What’s the Difference?
The Gamecocks will now be competing for spots in the NCAA East Regional, prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championship. The East Regional will be held in Jacksonville, Fla. this season, while the national championship will be back in Eugene, Ore.
Where the indoor season only has the NCAA Championship, consisting of the top 16 in each event and the top 12 in relays, the outdoor season is vastly different. To make the NCAA East Regional, you must individually rank inside the Top 48 and relays need to be ranked inside the Top 24. Once at the regional meet, the NCAA Outdoor Championship will be comprised of the top 12 for each event from that weekend.
