Amaral Breaks Program 10K Record in Day One of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 27, 2025) – Gamecock Track & Field had to wait well into Thursday night to witness history as Rogerio Amaral clocked the fastest outdoor 10K race in program history at the opening day of Raleigh Relays.

The Portugal native bested his previous personal best in the 10K by nearly 18 seconds, running 28:23.41 to surpass former teammate Bradley Makuvire (28:29.91) for the all-time lead in program history. In addition, Amaral finished 15th overall in a field that featured 131 entries.

The day started with five athletes from Carolina running in the 1500m event that featured 16 heats. Jaouad Khchina led the Gamecocks with a time of 3:41.43 to improve on his personal best time, finishing 18th overall. Khchina, ranking second all-time in program history in the outdoor 1500m, improved his mark by two-tenths of a second. Joshua Kosgei finished inside the top 50 in a field that featured over 200 entries. The Kenya product ran 3:47.00 to finish 47th overall in the individual leaderboard.

Noah Contreras (3:50.85), Carlos Lanzagorta-Ruiz (3:51.58) and Logan Hill (3:54.14) all ran collegiate personal best times in the 1500m to open the meet.

Day two of the Raleigh Relays will resume tomorrow with the women competing in five different events, starting with Sylvia Chelangat in the 400m at 2:10 p.m.
