QUICKLY: The South Carolina Gamecocks (2-2, 0-2 SEC) look to get back in the win column when they return home on Saturday, Sept. 27, to host the Kentucky Wildcats (2-1, 0-1 SEC) in an SEC battle. Game time is set for 7:45 pm at Williams-Brice Stadium (77,559) in Columbia.
OVER THE AIRWAVES: This week’s game will be televised on the SEC Network with Tom Hart handling the play-by-play and former Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers providing the color commentary. Cole Cubelic will work the sidelines. The Gamecock Sports Radio Network features a pair of Gamecock Hall of Fame quarterbacks in play-by-play voice Todd Ellis (34th season) and analyst Tommy Suggs (53rd season). Chet Tucker returns for his third year as the sideline reporter.
HOW WE GOT HERE: The Gamecocks are off to a 2-2 start this season. Carolina opened the season with a 24-11 non-conference win over Virginia Tech in Atlanta, then rolled past South Carolina State at home by a 38-10 margin. The Gamecocks had their eight-game regular season winning streak snapped at home against Vanderbilt, a 31-7 decision, in their SEC opener, then fell by a 29-20 count at Missouri last Saturday night to even their record at 2-2 and fall to 0-2 in SEC play. The back-to-back losses are the first for Carolina since dropping consecutive decisions to Ole Miss and Alabama a year ago.
BEAMER BALL ALIVE AND WELL: The Gamecocks have been excellent on special teams in 2025:
* The Gamecocks have scored four non-offensive touchdowns this season – three on punt returns and one fumble recovery for a score.
* Vicari Swain leads the country with three of his seven punt returns going for touchdowns. Only 24 punts have been returned for touchdowns in the FBS so far this season. Swain ranks third in the nation in punt return average at 30.1 yards per return.
* Carolina ranks first in the SEC and fifth in the country in punt return average at 24.4 yards per return.
* Mason Love, the top freshman punter in the country, ranks 11th in the nation in average at 46.9-yards per punt. Carolina is fourth in the SEC and 18th in the country in net punting at 45.0 yards per punt.
* The Gamecocks have blocked one punt in 2025. Since Shane Beamer took the reins in 2021, Carolina has blocked 17 kicks/punts, tied with Old Dominion for second in the country behind only Notre Dame (18).
FIRST & GOLD CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS: As part of a nationwide effort to tackle pediatric cancer, South Carolina is once again teaming up with Curing Kids Cancer (CKC) for the 2025 First & Gold Campaign, now in its 13th year. South Carolina’s involvement in the First & Gold Campaign will directly benefit Curing Kids Cancer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding innovative pediatric cancer research and providing support for families facing this devastating disease. The Gamecocks will be wearing helmet stickers this week to help spread awareness of CKC.
