Gamecocks Travel to Purdue for Second Meet

WEST LAFEYETTE, Ind. –
After an outstanding start to the 2017-18 season, South Carolina swimming and diving will travel to West Lafeyette, Ind., to take on Purdue Thurs., Oct. 19. The dual meet will begin at 6 p.m. ET at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Gamecock women started their season strong with two SEC wins against Missouri and Arkansas on Saturday. Seniors Emma Barksdale and Kersten Dirrane placed first in two separate events to help South Carolina to their 155-145 win over Arkansas and 171-129 victory over Mizzou. Dirrane placed first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke at the meet. Barksdale earned her top finishes in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM, also helping the 400 freestyle relay team to their first-place finish.
South Carolina’s men also had two student-athletes take first in two separate races, with Fynn Minuth winning the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle and Nils Wich-Glasen placing first in the 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke. Despite strong finishes fromseveral individuals, which included a second-place finish by newcomer Grant Summers in the 3-meter dive, the Gamecocks fell to Mizzou, 154-144.
The men lead their series against Purdue 1-0, while this will be the women’s first matchup against the Boilermakers. The men’s last time out against Purdue, the Gamecocks won 167-129 at home as the 18th-ranked team in the nation, and current senior Akram Mahmoud took first in the 1000 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle.
