Mahmoud, Peribonio Named to Preseason All-America Team

Sept. 12, 2016

COLUMBIA, S.C. – CollegeSwimming.com announced its 2016-17 Division I Preseason All-America selections on Monday, which featured South Carolina swimmers Akram Mahmoud and Tomas Peribonio. Mahmoud (500 Freestyle, 1650 Freestyle) and Peribonio (1650 Freestyle) are two of 123 swimmers from 30 institutions chosen for the honor.

“We’re proud of both of these guys for their accomplishments throughout their careers,” said head coach McGee Moody. “This is just another recognition that ensures their hard work is paying off. We’re looking forward to a great season and seeing how these young men lead our program.”

Mahmoud earned All-America honors in three events at the 2016 NCAA Championships. He finished second in the 1650 free, setting a new school record and recording the best individual NCAA result in the history of the Carolina swimming program. Mahmoud also competed for his home country Egypt in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Peribonio earned four All-America honors at the 2016 NCAA Championships. He is just the fifth Gamecock to collect four All-America honors in one meet, and the first to do so in 27 years. Peribonio set a new school record in the 400 IM and swam a personal best in the 1650 free at the NCAA Championships.

Mahmoud, Peribonio and the rest of the Gamecocks are slated to open the 2016-17 season Oct. 7-8 at the Florida Gulf Coast Invite in Fort Myers, Fla.
