COLUMBIA, S.C. — The No. 18 South Carolina men’s swimming and diving team opens the home portion of the Gamecocks’ schedule hosting Purdue at Carolina Natatorium/Blatt P.E. Center. The meet is slated to being at noon and admission is free.
The Gamecock women’s diving squad will face off against Clemson starting at 10:45 a.m.

Meet Notes 
A LOOK BACK
The Gamecock men opened their 2015-16 campaign with a first place finish at the FGCU Classic. South Carolina’s women finished third at the event.
SCOUTING PURDUE
Purdue opened the season with a win over Michigan State and a loss to Michigan at the MSU Outdoor Invitational. The Boilermakers followed with a 1st place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiate meet.
WATCH OUT FOR WICH-GLASEN
Sophomore Nils Wich-Glasen won both the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM at the FGCU classic. He added a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke. For the second consecutive year Wich-Glasen became the first Gamecock to record and NCAA provisional cut going 55.31 in the 100 breaststroke.
MAHMOUD ON THE MOVE
Sophomore Akram Mahmoud posted a trio of wins at the FGCU Classic, claiming first place in the 200 and 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly.
FRESHMEN IN THE FAST LANE
Rookie Paige Maynard won both the 100 (54.86) and 200 (2:00.25) butterfly in her collegiate debut at the FGCU Classic. Her times in both events were less than one second shy of an NCAA B cut. Maynard’s performance earned her SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
In his collegiate debut Cody Bekemeyer won both consolations heats and finished ninth overall in the 200 and 500 freestyle at the FGCU Classic. Both of Bekemeyer’s times would have placed second overall in the championship heat.
WORLD TRAVELERS
This summer four Gamecocks competed internationally, representing their native countries. Akram Mahmoud and Marwan El Kamash both swam at the FINA World Champions in Kazan, Russia and the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo as part of the Egyptian National Team. Mahmoud finished fourth in the 1500-meter freestyle at World Championships and currently ranks fifth in the world. Tomas Peribonio competed at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada and the FINA World Championships on behalf of Ecuador. Peribonio set a pair of Ecuadorian national records and finished seventh overall in the 400-meter IM. Diver Julia Vincent became a three-time South African National Champion, winning the 1-meter, 3-meter and synchronized diving titles at the South African Nationals.
GUESS WHO’S BACK
The Gamecocks return a combined 42 swimmers and dives including six of their eight NCAA qualifiers from last season.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
South Carolina added 23 newcomers to the roster this season.
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
The Gamecocks lost a combined 15 swimmers and divers from last year’s roster.
South Carolina say goodbye to three-time All-American diver Cole Miller. Miller earned All-America honors on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform at the 2015 NCAA Championships to help propel the Gamecocks to a 19th place finish.

The Gamecocks begin SEC action hosting Alabama on Sat., Oct. 31. The meet is slated to begin at noon at the Blatt P.E. Center/Carolina Natatorium.
