CLEMSON, S.C. – The South Carolina track and field team opened the season in dominating fashion Saturday, winning 11 events at the Orange and Purple Classic, hosted by Clemson. The two teams also combined for 14 athletes in the top three of their respective events.
Stephanie Berger started the morning competition out on a high note, winning the, 5K race in a time of 18:02.15. The junior led from start to finish, and freshman Hannah Giangaspro would round out the top-three with a finish in 18:35.59. The dominance in distance events continued with Anna Todd, who followed up a solid cross country season with a win in the 3K. She jumped all over the competition, winning by over 40 seconds. Her time of 9:58.91 saw her lap the second-place finisher from Clemson en route to the win.
Not to be outdone, the sprint squad more than its fair share of winners on the day. Tyler Brockington and Erika Rucker had a pair of wins, with Brockington winning the 200-meter dash, Rucker winning the 800-meter and the two combining with Precious Holmes and Briana Haith to win the 4x400m relay race (3:41.27). Along with her two wins, Brockington finished fourth in the 60-meter dash.
It was an equally successful day in field events, with three titles. Megan Wall opened the morning out with a win in the pole vault, clearing a mark of 3.68 meters. In the jumps, Alexis Murphy won the long jump with a stretch of 6.11 meters, and in the triple jump newcomer Leanne Morrison (12.84 meters) won with Natasha Dicks coming in third (12.22 meters).
On the men’s side Clayton Gravesande returned after sitting out the 2014 season and picked up right where he left off. The three-time All-American won the 400-meter sprint with a time of 48.22. Kevin Keating followed with a win in the very next race, taking the 800-meter race at 1:57.01.
In the day’s final event, the men’s 4×400, Jermaine Collier, Gravesande, Jussi Kanervo and Ryan Bermudez, beat out rival Clemson by just a tenth of a second (3:15.04).
The team will travel to Blacksburg, Va. next week for the Virginia Tech Invitational. The two-day meet will begin Friday, Jan. 16.
