Starkville, Ms. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team survived a 4-3 scare from Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center in Starkville, Ms. The win improved the Gamecocks to 12-7 overall and it evened their record at 5-5 in the SEC while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-12 overall and to 1-9 in conference play.
Mississippi State took the doubles point by taking two of the three double matches. Ayako Suzuki and Magda Wojdylo took number three doubles for the Gamecocks 8-6 against Marcelle Hirt and Justyna Switala. Tarryn and Hayley Rudman took number two doubles against South Carolina’s Christyn Lucas and Fallon Koon 8-6. The Bulldogs would clinch the doubles point when Magdi Rekasi and Anastasia Kugakolova defeated Laura Ganzer and Danielle Wiggins 8-5 at number one.
Being down 1-0 after losing the doubles point, the Gamecocks would fight back to take four of the six singles matches to take the match 4-3. 73rd ranked Danielle Wiggins evened up the score at 1-1 when she defeated Marcelle Hirt 6-0,6-0 at number one singles. Fallon Koon put the Gamecocks up 2-1 with a 6-3,6-1 win over Hayley Rudman at number five singles. Magdi Rekasi tied the match at two all when she defeated Magda Wojdylo at number four singles. At number six singles, Justine Walsh defeated Justyna Switala 7-5,6-1 to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Gamecocks. Tarryn Rudman would tie the match for the Bulldogs with a three set win over Laura Ganzer at number three singles. Carolina would finally clinch the match when Christyn Lucas won at number two singles 6-3,7-5 against Anastasia Kugakolova.
The Gamecocks return to action on Wednesday when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd at 1pm at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Facility in Columbia.
