Greenville, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team opened up the 2004 Fall season on Friday by taking five of seven double matches and four of seven singles matches. USC will have two doubles teams competing in their flight championship match on Saturday while four players advanced in singles play.

In flight two doubles, Fallon Koon and Miranda Gutierrez defeated Iowa’s Hilary Tyler and Morgan Tuttle 8-5 and then advanced to the championship match by a default in their second match of the day. In flight three, Laura Ganzer and Megan McGavock took a 8-6 win against Iowa’s Anastasia Zhukova and Milica Veselinovic in the opening round before defeating Martin and Ferrell 8-6 to advance to the final.

In singles, Miranda Gutierrez, Fallon Koon, Magda Wojdylo, and Megan McGavock all won their opening round matches on the day. Gutierrez defeated Clemson’s Maria Brito in straight sets 6-2,7-6(2) on Friday. Koon defeated Jacqui Williams of Middle Tennessee 6-2,6-3 in flight five while McGavock and Wojdylo took wins in straight sets to advance in the flight six bracket.

The Gamecocks continue play in Greenville at the Furman Fall Classic on Saturday.
