Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over the Winthrop Eagles on Wednesday. The loss dropped the Eagles to 4-1. The Gamecocks will now take a week off to prepare for SEC play that starts the first weekend of March.
USC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles contest. Danielle Wiggins and Laura Ganzer took the No. 2 doubles match 8-2 over Winthrop’s Jenny Andrade and Ana Simanca. Christyn Lucas and Magda Wojdylo clinched the doubles point for the Gamecocks with an 8-4 win over Ana Paula Novaes and Danielle Moita at the top doubles flight. Miranda Gutierrez and Megan McGavock finished the doubles sweep for the Gamecocks with an 8-5 victory over Paula Takahashi and Renata Caceres at three.
Carolina extended their lead to 2-0 when Miranda Gutierrez took a 6-4,6-2 victory over Renata Caceres at four and then minutes later Laura Ganzer picked up USC’s third point with a 6-3,6-1 win over Paula Takahashi at three. Christyn Lucas clinched the match for the Gamecocks with a 6-1,6-4 win at two over Danielle Moita, 6-1,6-4. Jenny Andrade won Winthrop’s only point with a 6-2,7-6 victory over Magda Wojdylo at four singles. Danielle Wiggins, in her first singles match of the season, took a three set victory over Ana Paula Novaes to give the Gamecocks a 5-1 lead. Justine Walsh finished off the Carolina win with a three set victory over Larisa Bekmetova to make the final score 6-1.
USC will return to action on March 2nd when they travel to Arkansas to play the Arkansas Lady Backs and after the match with the Razorbacks, USC will travel to Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers on Sunday March 4th.
