Dallas, Texas – The USC women’s swimming and diving team completed day one of competition of the SMU Women’s Classic and are in fifth place with 98 points. Florida leads the two-day invitational with a score of 167. Highlighting the first day for Carolina was senior diver Tracey Richardson who won the one-meter competition with a score of 255.05. Sophomore swimmer Christy Williams had a third place performance in the 100 butterfly and was also the second fastest in her leg of the 800 freestyle relay. Junior swimmer Lindsey Tiberio also had a solid third place performance in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.83. The SMU Classic will conclude on Saturday evening with the Classic set to get underway at 8:30 p.m. ET at Perkins Natatorium.
“Unfortunately our DQ in the first event, the medley relay, kind of set the tone for our evening,” said USC head swimming coach Don Gibb. “We looked a little sluggish but we had some good performances. Christy Williams was excellent and she led off our 800 free relay at 1:51, which was right near the fastest of the meet. Tracey Richardson did a great job diving for us and Lindsey Tiberio had a decent race in the 100 breaststroke.”
Richardson, who earned two second place finishes behind USC diver Allison Brennan last week vs. Florida, dove well as she finished at 255.05 on the low board, 15 points higher than Alicia Miller from the Gators.
After starting off with no points on the DQ in the 400 medley relay, USC would try to bounce back with Amanda Dunnigan taking sixth place in the 400 IM at 4:26.84 and Carly Hensel in 11th at 4:29.47. Haley Skaggs would finish sixth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.08 and Kassy Kugler was 12th finishing at 1:56.50. Skaggs also finished in sixth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.25.
In her first event of the evening, Williams took home third place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.56. Sophomore Heather Roffey would earn 10th with a time of 57.41. In other events, sophomore Kelly Giese would take home 11th place in the 50 freestyle (24.63) and 12th place in the 100 backstroke (1:02.03). Dunnigan finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.48).
USC would close out the meet finishing sixth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:36.09. Williams swam the opening leg, 200 yards freestyle, with a time of 1:51.86.
“Our girls realize they need to bring their “A” game and I think we will be better tomorrow and a little more sharper up front,” said Coach Gibb.
