The University of South Carolina Gamecock football team worked out for two hours Saturday morning at the Bluff Road practice fields, just one week from taking the field for the season-opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. The squad will enjoy an off day on Sunday before returning to the practice fields on Monday night at 7 p.m.

“We had a good little steamy morning, but we were only out here a couple hours or so,” said Head Coach Steve Spurrier following the session. “We had a good practice and we’re looking forward to next week. Hopefully we’ll have a routine week of practice and get ready to play Louisiana-Lafayette. They beat Houston last year. I think they were 6-6. They’re a good team,” continued Coach Spurrier. “They play hard, aggressive. They take a lot of pride in football throughout the whole state of Louisiana. We’ll have to play well to beat Louisiana-Lafayette. Hopefully we’ll play well and we should. We should be ready to play well Saturday night. Monday we’ll start trying to gear up a game plan for the Ragin’ Cajuns.”

Mike Davis (sore left shoulder) was back at practice on Saturday. Jasper Brinkley still has a “boot” on his ankle, but Coach Spurrier said he expects him to be ready to go Saturday night.

Coach Spurrier mentioned that Stoney Woodson could see some time at safety with Emanuel Cook sidelined. “He’s available to play there. That puts Carlos (Thomas) in the (cornerback) spot if we go that way. Emanuel Cook I think has a hearing with the university sometime on Tuesday. We’re hoping it will be positive of course.”
