The seventh-ranked South Carolina Gamecock football team practiced on Monday night at the Bluff Road practice fields for the first time since its 38-23 win over eighth-ranked Kentucky last Thursday. The Gamecocks are preparing for Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. ET showdown with North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The game will be televised regionally by ABC.

Following the two hour session Head Coach Steve Spurrier met with the media:

“We did a little extra stuff just trying to get the guys back a little bit conditioning-wise since we had three days off. Web (Brown) was out here. Freddie Brown was fine. Most of them went home for the weekend I think. We’re just settling into our routine and hopefully we’ll play a lot better. Our offense didn’t play very well last week as we all know, but I guess we had enough good plays to score a few points. The offense outscored (Eric) Norwood by one touchdown. We still got to block somebody up front. Lem (Jeanpierre) is getting another look. We’ll have some different guards in there probably, but maybe not. Seaver (Brown) did ok. Seaver will probably be in there. James Thompson struggled a little bit, but he’s been doing pretty well.

“The defense has played well. It really has. They will have to continue to play well if we’re going to win.

“North Carolina’s a pretty good team. They’ve lost a bunch of close ones. They look about as good as anybody we’ve played lately. They haven’t been winning a lot up there, but they have been recruiting. North Carolina has always recruited well. They’ve got ball players.”

The Gamecocks will be back on the practice fields on Tuesday afternoon.
