The South Carolina Gamecocks returned to the Bluff Road practice fields Thursday afternoon for a 90-minute session before enjoying their annual pool party at the Strom Thurmond Fitness Center. The squad was dressed in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts one day after holding a scrimmage at Williams-Brice Stadium.

“Not much going on, just a practice in the afternoon today,” said Head Coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. “The weather was pretty nice. I think it was under 90 (degrees) today. Just a so-so practice – nothing special.”

“Can’t open up the scrimmage Saturday,” continued Coach Spurrier. “I wish we could if it was only the Gamecock fans, but with the internet and videos, we’re going to actually work on some plays that we hope to use the first or second week of the season, so we felt it would be smart to close it up.”

Thursday saw the return to practice of offensive lineman Jamon Meredith, quarterback Stephen Garcia and tailback Taylor Rank, who have all been sidelined with injuries. “They were back limping around, so if you call that back, then they’re back, but they’re not anywhere close,” said Coach Spurrier. “I think Bobby Wallace will be ready to go Saturday, he and Taylor Rank. Mike Davis may be able to do a little bit, I’m not sure yet on him. Joe (Hills) sprained his (left) toe,” continued Coach Spurrier. “He pulled a “Gamecock.” I guess we’ll call it a “Gamecock” when you’re going into the end zone and you relax. He was across the line but didn’t realize Akeem (Auguste) was hustling and trying to break it up and fell on his foot. Hopefully, one day our guys will learn just because you cross the goal line or get near it, the game is not over. Guys are flying around trying to make plays.”

The squad will work out twice on Friday then will hold another scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. All of the practices, including Saturday’s scrimmage will be closed.
