Freshmen Jarvis Giles and Tori Gurley provided some spark to the offense, but the defense got the better of it overall, as the South Carolina Gamecocks held the first of three scrimmages this spring on Friday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Giles, a true freshman from Tampa, Fla., rushed 12 times for 80 yards, including bursts of 16, 15 and 12 yards, while Gurley, a redshirt freshman from Rock Hill, S.C., caught three passes for 123 yards, including touchdown receptions of 56 and 28 yards.
“It was a good scrimmage for the defense,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following the 64-play session. “The defensive guys seemed to be flying around, playing well. The offensive struggled – the O-line struggled, the quarterbacks struggled, the receivers struggled. We had a few little runs here and there, but not many. Tori caught some jump balls,” added Coach Spurrier. “That seems to be our best play, the ol’ jump ball, right now. Tori can go up and get it fortunately. Maybe Tori advanced a little bit. Jarvis had some runs here and there, but not too much. The offense struggled most of the day.”
Cornerbacks Addison Williams and Cedric Snead intercepted passes for a defense that registered a handful of sacks on the day.
Several hundred fans, including numerous Gamecock Lettermen, who spent the morning on the golf course before watching the practice and enjoying a dinner with the current squad, witnessed the scrimmage.
The Gamecocks will return to the Bluff Road practice fields on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
