ORLANDO, Fla. – South Carolina broke out with a five-run second and a four-run fourth to defeat North Florida, 9-0, in five innings in the Gamecocks’ second game of the day in the UCF Invitational.

Juniors Laura Mendes and P.J. Fulmer had two hits apiece, with Fulmer driving in a career-high four runs. Sophomore Evan Childs had two runs scored, while senior Adele Voigt added two RBI.

South Carolina broke out in the second, plating five in the frame after a leadoff error let senior Lindsay Walker reach first. Childs moved them both into scoring position with her double over the leftfielder’s head. After a fly out, freshman Briana Hamilton drew a free pass to load the bases. Fulmer drove home Walker, while freshman Hannah Milks sent Childs home with her hit. Sophomore Lauren Lackey got a single with the bases jammed, but her strike hit Milks’ cleats, keeping the other runners from scoring. Voigt poked a hit up the middle, driving in two, and Mendes wrapped up the scoring in the frame with a single to center.

The Garnet and Black added to their lead in the fourth, as junior April Borchardt’s single to center scored Mendes. After loading the bases for the third straight inning, Fulmer cleared them with a shot off the left field wall for a double, making it 9-0.

Sophomore Audrey Broyles (2-0) got her second win of the season, striking out nine in a three-hit shutout. Devyn Findley (1-6) got the loss, allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits while fanning two.

The Gamecocks wrap up their stay in Orlando on Sunday with an 11 a.m. matinee against Troy.
