GAINESVILLE, Fla. – South Carolina (11-39, 1-26 SEC) scored first but could not hold on in a 6-1 loss to No. 6/5 Florida (41-7, 19-4 SEC) in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
Senior Adele Voigt put the Gamecocks on top in the third with a two-out RBI single, scoring sophomore Kandyce Redondo. Redondo reached with one down in the frame on a base hit and stole second on a pitch in the dirt that fanned junior Laura Mendes.
But the Gators responded in the fifth with three unearned runs. A throwing error on Corrie Brooks’ sacrifice bunt attempt allowed both Kelsey Bruder and Ensley Gammel to score on the play. Brooks moved to third on a sac bunt by Kelsey Horton before scoring on Aja Paculba’s sacrifice fly. Florida added three more runs in the sixth. Kelsey Bruder drove in the first, while she was on the back end of the double steal play that allowed pinch runner Lauren Heil to score. Brooks plated Bruder with an RBI single that made it 6-1.
Bruder went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Gators, while Voigt had two of the five hits for South Carolina.
Ensley Gammel (13-2) allowed one earned run in the complete game, allowing five hits and a walk against seven strikeouts. Junior April Borchardt (4-5) took the loss, giving up all six runs, three earned, on six hits and four walks while fanning two.
