COLUMBIA, S.C. – Four Gamecocks posted two hits as South Carolina moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-1 victory over Furman (0-3) in the first game of day two of the Palmetto State Showdown at Beckham Field.

Junior leftfielder Kaitlin Westfall led the two-hit brigade by driving in two with her home run. Senior designated player Laura Mendes, junior third baseman Kelley Dillon and junior centerfielder Lauren Lackey both added two hits, with Dillon driving in a run. Junior first baseman Molly Brossart had a home run and two RBI.

The Gamecocks got on the board in the first after loading the bases with a walk, a hit and a reached-by-error. After a foul out, Brossart lifted a deep sacrifice fly that allowed sophomore shortstop Samie Garcia to score. Dillon followed with an RBI single, scoring sophomore right fielder Hannah Milks.

Two more Gamecock runs came in the third after Westfall followed Dillon’s second single with a shot that wrapped around the left field fair pole for her first homer of the season. Brossart added a solo shot to left in the fifth to make it 5-1.

Furman got its lone run in the first when Stephanie Field scored from third on a wild pitch.

Senior Ashley Chastain (1-0) got the win, tossing four innings while giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk. She struck out two. Senior April Borchardt picked up her first save as a Gamecock, throwing three innings of scoreless relief.
