COLUMBIA, S.C. – Junior left-hander Steven Neff improved to 2-0 on the year with a solid 5.1 innings of work allowing just one run and the Gamecocks scored five times in the fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 5-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in game two of the three-game set at Carolina Stadium. The series finale is set for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with live video broadcast available at GamecocksOnline.com and the game also on the Gamecock Radio Network.

In his second start of the season, Neff went 5.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts and two hit by pitches. Cal State Bakersfield starter Jonathan Montoya went five-plus innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and seven walks allowed. He is now 2-1 on the year.

Cal State Bakersfield broke ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Andrew Letourneau led off with a single, was sacrificed to second base and scored on Martin Medina’s two-out RBI base hit to left field.

South Carolina answered in the bottom half of the fourth though with three runs to claim a two-run advantage. With runners on the corners and two outs, Evan Marzilli laced a RBI single to right field scoring Robert Beary to put the Gamecocks on the scoreboard. After Marzilli stole second base giving the Gamecocks a pair of runners in scoring position, Montoya let one slip allowing Scott Wingo to score on a wild pitch. After a walk to Adam Matthews, the Gamecocks increased the lead to 3-1 on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s RBI single to right field scoring Marzilli.

Carolina increased the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning. Adrian Morales led off with a walk and after a one-out walk to Robert Beary would steal third base. He then scored on a RBI single courtesy of Peter Mooney. Scott Wingo would drive in Beary with a RBI base hit as well. CSU Bakersfield would scratch across a run in the eighth inning as Jeremy Rodriguez delivered with a two-out RBI single to score Tyler Shryock.

The Gamecock bullpen continues to have a success as several arms were able to hurl quality innings. Bryan Harper tied a season-high with 2.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts. John Taylor hurled a scoreless inning with a strikeout and Logan Munson retired the lone batter he faced before giving the ball to Matt Price. Price retired both batters he faced including one strikeout.

Carolina finished with a 9-7 advantage in hits. Beary went 2-for-2 with two runs scored with Jake Williams 2-for-3 as well to lead the Gamecocks at the plate.

South Carolina will send sophomore left-hander Tyler Webb (2-0, 1.10 ERA) to the hill tomorrow against Cal State Bakersfield junior right-hander Tommy Hoenshell (2-2, 2.05 ERA).
