The University of South Carolina football team worked out again Wednesday morning in full pads at the Bluff Road practice fields.
Following the practice session head coach Steve Spurrier was asked about the recent transfer of redshirt freshman quarterback Tanner McEvoy. “We’ve got a lot of quarterbacks here, and personally I believe that was the best thing for him to do because Dylan (Thompson) has come along very nicely and Connor (Shaw) has another year,” said Coach Spurrier. “Dylan has three more years. I don’t see him beating Dylan out in two or three years. He wants to play quarterback. Quarterbacks transfer all the time. I think it’s the best opportunity for him so I hope it works out for him.”
Senior tight end Justice Cunningham sat out the practice with a sore back, according to Coach Spurrier. Senior cornerback Akeem Auguste remains sidelined with a groin injury. Redshirt freshman Mason Harris also missed practice with a groin injury.
The Gamecocks are scheduled to scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. “We’ll let Marcus (Lattimore) even carry two or three times in the scrimmage Saturday. He wants to go live. We’ve got to hold him back a little bit. We need to stay healthy through all of these practices. We’re trying to keep our guys healthy as much as possible.”
“This time next week, we’ll be about two weeks away from the game so we’ll start coaching the guys who will be in the game.,” noted Coach Spurrier. “Right now we’re coaching everybody. A week from now we’ll have a scout team and hopefully know who our players are that are going to do most of the real ball playing once we get to Vanderbilt.”
The Gamecocks are scheduled to work out twice on Thursday, first at 8:30 a.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. Both practices are open to the public.
