COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Gamecocks picked up six wins at the USC Indoor Open, their second home meet of the year. South Carolina swept the 55-meter hurdles with freshman Dondre Echols taking the men’s side and sophomore Chalese Davis winning the women’s section. The pole vault was also a sweep with sophomores Megan Wall and Colin Buxton winning their groups. Freshman Paris Smalls won the men’s 400-meter and sophomore Daniel Novak took the men’s 800-meter.
In the women’s 55-meter dash, the Gamecocks qualified freshmen Alexis Murphy and Gabrielle Gray. Murphy finished second in both the prelims and the finals, running a season best of 7.07 in the finals. Gray finished fifth, also running a season best of 7.14. On the men’s side, freshman Brandon Sanders qualified in the second spot for the finals and ran a 6.56 to place eighth in the finals.
Echols earned his first win in the Garnet and Black, powering through the 55-meter hurdles section. Echols won both the prelims and the finals, running a time of 7.49 to win. Fellow freshman Jermaine Collier finished second in both rounds as well, registering a season best 7.50 in the close finals run.
Davis got her first win of the season in the 55-meter hurdles on the women’s side. Davis ran an 8.03 in the finals with freshman Tyler Brockington improving her 8.74 time in the prelims to an 8.31 in the finals to place second.
The Gamecocks went 1-2 in the 400-meter with Smalls turning in a time of 52.96 with junior Nigel Redic just behind him with a time of 53.50. Sophomore Daniel Novak won the 800-meter run in his first attempt at the race this season with a time of 2:04.64. Freshman Ashley Miller placed fourth in the 800-meter run in her first appearance of the season with a time of 2:49.29.
In the mile run, freshmen Lannon McCoy and Alexandra Mullin finished 3-4, running times of 5:46.48 and 5:49.25, respectively.
Redshirt sophomore Walker Selby bested the PR that he sent at the at the first USC Indoor Open on Jan. 12, with a throw of 55’3 (16.84m) to take second in the weight throw.
Wall won the women’s pole vault with a jump of 11’11 ¾ (3.65m). Redshirt junior Tylar Mangan placed third with a clearance of 10’6 (3.20m). The Gamecocks also won the men’s pole vault, with Buxton matching a PR at 14’5 ¼ (4.40m) to win the group.
South Carolina will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational this weekend. Competition begins at 5 p.m. on Friday.
