Former University of South Carolina head football coach Warren Giese died Thursday in Columbia. He was 89.

Giese coached the Gamecocks from 1956 to 1960, compiling a 28-21-1 record over five years. His 28 wins are the eighth-most all-time at South Carolina.

Giese’s best season came in 1958 when he led the Gamecocks to a 7-3 record, including a 5-2 mark in the ACC and finished the season ranked 13th in the country.

A former elected member of the South Carolina Senate, Giese played football at Oklahoma and Central Michigan. He also served in the Navy.

Giese is survived by his wife Phyllis and four children.
