GREENVILLE, S.C. — Six members of the South Carolina women’s tennis team advanced in singles play at the Furman Fall Classic on Friday in Greenville, S.C.
Meghan Blevins reached the semifinals of the top singles flight with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Joanna Henderson of Tennessee, while Elixane Lechemia did likewise in flight four by upending Ani Miao of Clemson by scores of 6-2, 6-3. Blevins improved to 3-1 this fall with the victory, while Lechemia evened her record at 2-2.
Ximena Siles Luna moved to 4-0 this spring with a lopsided 6-2, 6-1 win versus Kelly Sullivan from Furman in flight five, and Caroline Dailey also stayed perfect with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Clemson’s Carola Pederzani in flight six. Both Siles Luna and Dailey won their respective singles flights last weekend at the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
Alex Martin snagged her first win of the fall in flight six with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 decision over Karlee Bryde of Furman. Natalie Looney beat Mia Virens of Florida State 6-3, 7-6 in flight seven to round out the Gamecocks’ singles victories on day one.
It was a tough day for Carolina in doubles, as the Gamecocks registered only a pair of wins in eight matches. Katerina Popova and Dailey picked up an 8-3 win versus Talcott and Hindmarsh from Iowa in the consolation semifinals of flight one. Lechemia and Blevins scored an 8-1 triumph over FSU’s Santos and Schleigh in the quarterfinals of flight two. They suffered an 8-6 setback to Speilmann and Zabor from Alabama in the semis.
Play continues in the Furman Fall Classic with one round of doubles and one round of singles on Saturday.
