PRESS CONFERENCES
Coach Spurrier
Dylan Thompson

The South Carolina Gamecocks will face the Miami Hurricanes in the 2014 Duck Commander Independence Bowl, it was announced on Sunday. The December 27 game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET (2:30 CT) from Independence Stadium (48,961) in Shreveport, La. and will be televised nationally on ABC. It will mark the Gamecocks’ 20th bowl appearance in school history.

South Carolina heads into the contest with an overall record of 6-6, including a 3-5 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Miami posted a 6-6 overall mark as well, including a 3-5 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

This is the 16th time the Gamecocks and Hurricanes have met on the gridiron, but the first since 1987 and just the third since 1960. Miami leads the all-time series, 8-5-2, and has won each of the last six meetings between the two schools. South Carolina’s last win over the Hurricanes came by an 8-0 score in 1947.

This will be South Carolina’s second trip to Shreveport and the Independence Bowl. The Gamecocks dropped a 38-31 decision to the Missouri Tigers on December 30, 2005, concluding head coach Steve Spurrier’s first season with the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks are bowl-eligible for the 11th-consecutive year and for each of the 10 seasons under Coach Spurrier. This will mark the Gamecocks’ seventh-consecutive bowl appearance, extending their school record. South Carolina is 7-12 in bowl appearances all-time, but has won seven of its last 11 bowl games.

Coach Spurrier is 4-4 in bowl games at South Carolina, including wins in each of the last three bowl games (2012 Capital One Bowl against Nebraska, 2013 Outback Bowl versus Michigan and 2014 Capital One Bowl against Wisconsin). Coach Spurrier is 10-10 all-time as a head coach in bowl games. He lost his only previous meeting with the Hurricanes, a 37-27 setback in the 2001 Sugar Bowl.

The Gamecocks are scheduled to begin their bowl practices on Tuesday, December 16.
