COLUMBIA, Mo. – Freshman forward Simone Wark led South Carolina to a 1-0 victory over Missouri on Sunday afternoon at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Stadium. The Gamecocks improve to 8-1-0 and 2-0 in the SEC while the loss drops the Tigers to 3-3-3 and 1-1-0 in league action.

In the 36th minute, Wark powered past the Missouri defense and at 15 yards out sent her shot into the back of the net. Wark’s goal gave the Gamecocks a 1-0 advantage, which proved to be enough to top the Tigers. The freshman tallied three shots in 23 minutes of action.

Senior keeper Caroline Kelly earned the win and improves to 5-1-0 on the year. She made three saves in 90 minutes of action.

GAME CHANGER

Wark’s goal was the only score South Carolina needed to secure the win over Missouri.

NOTABLES

  • Freshman forward Simone Wark scored her first career goal and became the 15th different gamecock to score this season.
  • This marked the Gamecocks third shutout victory of the season.

QUOTABLE South Carolina Head Coach Shelley Smith

Obviously it was a great win on the road. It was a hard fought battle. It wasn’t our most well played game overall but I think we did great to get the win and had to move some things around due to some injuries. Give credit to our team (for moving around due to the inquires) and to Simone (Wark) to step up and find her first goal. Her work rate has been tremendous and I’m glad she was rewarded with that goal.

UP NEXT

The Gamecocks return home on Thursday to host Texas A&M at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be televised on the SEC Network.
