CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina golfer Katelyn Dambaugh grabbed runner-up honors at the 2016 Cougar Classic Tuesday after turning in the lowest 54-hole total (206) in program history. The senior posted a final-round 69 (-3) to finish the three-day event one stroke off the individual title at 10-under.

The Gamecocks carded a 295 (+7) on the last day at Yeamans Hall Club to place in a tie for seventh at 5-over 869. By finishing 10 spots ahead of Clemson (889, +25), South Carolina earned a point in the 2016-17 Palmetto Series.

Dambaugh’s tournament-long birdie barrage continued Tuesday, as she tallied five more in the third round. The Goose Creek, S.C., native began her day on a blistering pace, recording birdies on each of her first three holes, Nos. 4, 5 and 6. A birdie on the par-4 12th gave Dambaugh a front-nine 33 (-3), and she played her final nine holes at even following her fifth birdie of the day on No. 13 and a bogey on No. 1.

Junior Ainhoa Olarra and sophomore Marion Veysseyre both carded 73s (+1) Tuesday to finish in a tie for 34th with a three-day score of 219 (+3). Olarra finished her round with a pair of birdies and three bogeys, while Veysseyre recovered from bogeys on her opening two holes with birdies on Nos. 8, 10, 16 and 2.

Sophomore Isidora Nilsson tied for 83rd (226, +10) following her third-round 80 (+8). She finished her week second among Gamecocks with 12 birdies, while freshman Anita Uwadia posted an 80 (+8) Tuesday to finish in a tie for 93rd at 14-over 230.

North Carolina won the 54-hole event with an 838 (-26), while Furman (846, -18) and Wake Forest (851, -13) rounded out the top three. Kelly Whaley of the Tar Heels claimed medalist honors after edging out Dambaugh with a three-day score of 205 (-11).

Round Changer

Senior Katelyn Dambaugh jumpstarted her third-round 69 (-3) with three-straight birdies to begin her day. Her 17 birdies this week ranked second in the field.
