Martins Advances at ITA All-American Championships

Oct. 4, 2016

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Carolina women’s tennis’ Paige Cline, Caroline Dailey and Ingrid Gamarra Martins completed the first day at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday. Highlighting the opening day was Martins, who racked up two victories to put herself in the round of 16, and within one win of a spot in the main draw.

Martins, coming off a solid performance at the ITF 10k LTP Charleston, began her bid for a main draw spot with a win over Missouri’s Bea Machado Santos, the No. 36 ranked player in the country. In the second round, Martins battled back from a 4-1 third set deficit to topple Meible Chi, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. With a win in her round of 16 match on Wednesday, Martins would cement her place in the main draw, which would make her the first Gamecock to do so since 2000 when Katarina Markovski competed in the tournament’s top draw.

Cline and Dailey both fell in the opening round, eliminating them from a main draw spot, but they each bounced back to post wins over ranked opponents in their evening consolation matches. Cline now turns her attention to her main draw doubles match on Thursday with teammate Hadley Berg.
