COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 21st-ranked South Carolina women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C.

The Tar Heels (11-1) controlled the doubles matches from the beginning and went on to win at positions one and two for a 1-0 lead. Third-ranked Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney defeated No. 27 Hadley Berg and Paige Cline, 6-3, at one, while Alexa Graham and Cassandra Vazquez provided the clincher at two, 6-4, over Caroline Dailey and Mia Horvit.

South Carolina (6-2) managed to tie the score at 1-all following a dominant performance from Berg at No. 6 singles where she defeated James-Baker, 6-1, 6-2, to remain unbeaten this spring. Berg is 8-0 in dual matches between the Nos. 4-6 slots.

UNC took the lead for good after No. 4 Daavettila upended Dailey at the two spot, 7-6(4), 6-2. No. 40 Graham claimed a 6-3 first set off Chinellato at four and then came back from a 5-3 deficit in the second to win the match 7-2 in a tiebreaker. Aney, ranked 19th, held off Cline at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-0, to clinch the contest for North Carolina.

No. 100 Horvit and No. 3 Carter had their match suspended in the third set at one. Horvit took the first, 6-1, and then dropped the second, 6-4, before the two were deadlocked at 3-all in the third. Folland cruised in her first set over No. 70 Makenna Jones on court five, 6-0, before losing the second in a tiebreaker, 7-5. Jones had a 5-2 lead in the third set when play was stopped.

The Gamecocks are back at home tomorrow hosting a doubleheader against William & Mary and Charlotte beginning at 11 a.m.
