Despite strong individual performances, South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving was unable to top Purdue in the second meet of their 2017-18 season. The Gamecocks recorded 13 first-place finishes, but fell to the Boilermakers 174.5-123.5 (women) and 157-142 (men). The Gamecock men kept the score close throughout the competition, leading the meet until the penultimate event. The women trailed throughout the meet, but recorded multiple first-place finishes on individual events.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

-Tomas Peribonio recorded his second meet with two individual wins in the 200 free and 400 IM.

-Four Gamecocks recorded B-cut qualifying times: Nils Wich-Glasen in the 100 and 200 breast, Fynn Minuth in the 200 fly, Emma Barksdale in the 200 IM and Tom Peribino in the 400 IM.

-Both the men and women took first place in one relay. The women took first in the 400 free with Cristina Lappin, Meredith Vay, Edith Lingmann and Emma Barksdale. The men placed first in the 400 medley with Will Countie, Nils Wich-Glasen, Justin Rose and Patrick McCrillis.

The Gamecocks have a quick turnaround for their next meet, which will take place at Cincinnati Saturday at noon ET.

“Tonight, we had the opportunity to face Purdue in West Lafayette. They’re one of the top teams in the big ten and one of the top 15 in the country.

The women came up short, we came up short in the medley, which wasn’t what we expected. For the men, competing so well throughout the meet and then coming up short in the end is one of the worst ways to lose a meet.

I know both teams will bounce back against Cincinnati, and the expectation is to get two wins there this weekend.”

“Good day today, I saw improvements in everyone this week. We have been working on our fundamentals and many of those objectives were accomplished today. Purdue is one of the top teams in the country and we held our own today.

Vincent had a solid meet in the one meter. She had a slight miss on three meter, but overall had a great performance. Karlee Price continues to climb finishing in the top three on the three and one meter. Yu Qian Goh had an outstanding meet, improving all aspects of her diving. Mikaela Lujan was battling some sickness today, but stepped up and did some great dives.

Lyle Markman competed in his first meet this year. He is just now getting up to speed and had a reasonable performance. Grant Summers had another top three finish against a seasoned team. He continues to improve every week. Overall, it was very productive. We still have many things to work on, but everything is going in the right direction.

We’re looking forward to going against the Bearcats, my alma mater, on Saturday.”
