Gamecocks Maintain Rankings In Day Two

ATLANTA, Ga. – South Carolina swimming and diving remained solid in the second day of competition at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta. Several Gamecocks earned spots in the A-Finals of their respective events, and the team earned two first-place finishes throughout the day. Both the men and women maintained their spots in the rankings during day two with the men in third and the women in fifth.

The Gamecocks earned big points in the relay portion of the day, placing third in the men’s and women’s 800 freestyle relays and the men’s 200 medley relay.

Tom Peribonio and Cody Bekemeyer went one and two in the 400 IM as Peribonio finished with a time of 3:51.41 and Bekemeyer posted a 3:51.06. Emma Barksdale claimed the top spot in the women’s 400 IM, placing first in 4:12.30.

Christina Lappin placed in the top 10 of the 100 butterfly, finishing ninth with a time of 54.30.

Junior Fynn Minuth and freshman Tamas Novoszath competed in the 200 freestyle A-Final for South Carolina. Minuth finished third with a time of 1:36.96, and Novoszath finished eighth with a 1:38.99. In the women’s race, Heather Merritt took fifth place with a time of 1:49.37.

Nils Wich-Glasen took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.33. Itay Goldfaden also competed in the event’s A-Final, finishing seventh with a 54.27. Three Gamecock women made the 100 breaststroke A-Final, with Kersten Dirrane finishing third, Emma Barksdale finishing seventh and Albury Higgs finishing 10th.

Will Countie represented the men in the A-Final for the 100 backstroke, finishing seventh.

South Carolina will finish competing in the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday in Atlanta. The preliminary events will begin at 10 a.m. with live stats provided by Georgia Tech, here.

The Gamecocks’ female divers competed at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday. Julia Vincent took first out of 40 women competing in the 3-meter. Yu Qian Goh took third and Karlee Price finished in third.

“Today went very well,” said head diving coach Todd Sherritt. “Julia had a great performance, winning prelims and finals. NCAAs are here at Ohio State this year and getting adjusted here was very important to our team. Goh did an outstanding job today, finishing third. She didn’t miss a dive tonight and moved up from eighth to third in the finals. Price continues to have great performances every week. She missed a couple dives tonight but still moved up in the finals from sixth to fifth. I am so happy with this team and where we are at in this season. We still have a great deal of work, but everything is headed in the right direction.”
