Two Gamecocks Earn Academic Honor From United Soccer Coaches

Dec. 13, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina midfielder Lindsey Lane and defender Christoffer Wallander Ianev have earned spots on the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region Teams, the coaching organization announced Tuesday night. Lane was named to the First Team, while Wallander Ianev was tabbed a Second Team selection.

This week’s accolades mark the first United Soccer Coaches academic honors for both Gamecock seniors.

Lane, one of four team captains this fall, started all 23 matches for Carolina in 2017. She ranked fourth on the team with a career-high four points, and her four assists stood as the second-best mark among Gamecocks. Lane netted three goals during her senior campaign, including the game-winner in Carolina’s 1-0 victory over Alabama on Sept. 15. The Gamecocks reached the NCAA Elite Eight three times during her career, and they made the program’s first Women’s College Cup appearance this fall.

The exercise science major, who will graduate next spring, currently boasts a 3.50 cumulative GPA. She earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of her previous three seasons with the Gamecocks.

Wallander Ianev had a standout final year, earning Second Team All-C-USA recognition after tallying career-highs in points (7), assists (5) and goals (1). The transfer from Maryland, who started 35 games in two seasons at Carolina, scored his first career goal after notching the game-winner in the team’s 1-0 victory at UAB in the regular season finale. The win was head coach Mark Berson’s 500th in NCAA Division I men’s soccer and propelled the team to a berth in the C-USA Tournament.

The Gavle, Sweden, native, is graduating next week with a degree in economics from the world-renowned Darla Moore School of Business. He sports a 3.31 GPA and was named to the C-USA and SEC Academic Honor Rolls for the 2016-17 calendar year.
