Gamecocks Ninth After Day One of Women's SECs

200 medley relay team paces Carolina on day one in Athens

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sits in ninth after day one of the 2021 SEC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships with 76 team points after two relay events.
 
The Gamecocks opened the postseason on a positive note in the finals of the 200 medley relay finishing eighth scoring 44 team points. Freshman Bella Pantano (backstroke, 25.67), sophomore Taylor Steele (breaststroke, 27.19), sophomore Janie Smith (fly, 23.24) and junior Emma Walker (free, 22.92) swam a time of 1:39.02, good for the third-fastest in program history.
 
Sophomore Emma Alexander (1:48.30), junior Mari Kraus (1:47.75), freshman Riley Parker (1:48.09) and freshman Kaitlyn Porter (1:50.13) finished 11th with a time of 7:14.27 in the 800 free relay, good for the ninth-fastest mark all-time at South Carolina.
 
Swimming is taking place at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. with diving underway at Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo.
 
No Gamecocks qualified for the finals of the 1-meter dive. Senior Yu Qian Goh was the team’s highest finisher finishing 18th with a score of 240.00. Sophomore Mathilda Roxne finished 27th (224.40) and freshman Bria Diorio took 35th (176.95).
 
Day two of the 2021 SEC Women’s Swimming Championship begins on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET with the prelims for the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free. The finals of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relay will start at 6 p.m. ET. Both sessions can be viewed on SEC Network+.
 
The women’s 3-meter (prelims at noon ET) and men’s 1-meter (prelims at 4 p.m. ET) are on the schedule for the diving portion of the conference meet on Thursday.
