Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s swimming & diving team begins its 2004-05 season this weekend competing in the SMU Women’s Classic beginning Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. CT through Saturday, Oct. 23. South Carolina will compete along with host SMU, Indiana, Rice, Washington and the University of British Columbia. Carolina returns to the pool after a solid 2003-04 campaign in which theGamecocks finished 11th at the NCAA Championships, which tied for the second highest finish in school history.

“It’s exciting to get the season underway and get a chance to compete against other teams,” said USC swimming coach Don Gibb. “I think we have made some great progress over the last month and I’m anxious to see where we stand.”

Each team will bring eight swimmers and one diver to compete in the two-day competition. Swimming at the invitational for USC will be senior Carolynn McHugh, junior Haley Skaggs, sophomore Kendel Fiorentino and freshmen Mandee Cregar, Carly Hensel, Heather Roffey, Kasey Tamkun and Christy Williams. Senior Lauren King will represent the Gamecocks in diving.

“This is the first real test for our newcomers,” said Coach Gibb. “They have done a pretty good job in the pool and in training already. There is a lot of enthusiasm and the attitude of everybody is up. It should be a good experience for them. In a lot of these events they will be competing against other individuals who have already competed at the NCAA’s.”

Both the South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams compete in the first dual meet of the season on Friday, Nov.5 at 5 p.m. when the Gameocks host Clemson at the Carolina Natatorium.
