Fayetteville, Ark. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team improved to 6-0 on the season and to 1-0 in the conference with a 6-1 win against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday in Fayetteville. The loss for the Razorbacks dropped them to 10-1 overall and 0-1 in the SEC. The win was Carolina fourth straight SEC opening match victory.

The Gamecocks dropped the doubles point with Arkansas taking wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles position. Christyn Lucas and Magda Wojdylo took Carolina’s only doubles victory with an 8-3 win over Melissa Cornett and Vlatka Jovanic at No. 2.

Being down 1-0 after doubles marked the third time this season that the Gamecocks headed into singles needing four matches to clinch the victory. Carolina evened the match at one point a piece when Magda Wojdylo took a 6-4,6-1 victory over Melissa Cornett at five. Christyn Lucas gave USC a 2-1 advantage when she upset 65th ranked Maryori Franco in straight sets by scores of 6-4,6-4. Laura Ganzer extended the USC lead to 3-1 when she defeated Karina Ledaja in three sets. Ledaja took the first set 6-3 but Ganzer bounced back to the second and third sets to get Carolina within one win shy of clinching the victory. Miranda Gutierrez would clinch the victory for USC with a three-set win over Yawna Allen at four. Gutierrez took the first set 6-2 but dropped the second 7-5 before taking a 7-6(5) win in the final stanza. Danielle Wiggins and Justine Walsh took the other two single matches to complete the Gamecock singles sweep and to make the final 6-1 in favor of the Gamecocks.

Carolina will return to action on Sunday when they play the LSU Tigers at 2:00 p.m. in Baton Rouge. After facing the Tigers on Sunday, USC will return to action to host BYU on Tuesday at noon.
