Feb. 11, 2006

South Carolina standout sprinter Shalonda Solomon won the 200-meter dash, as the Tyson Invitational wrapped up on the University of Arkansas campus Saturday afternoon. The Randal Tyson Track Complex will be the site of the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Solomon, a sophomore from Inglewood, Calif. who entered the meet ranked No. 1 in the nation, showed why she is the favorite to bring home the gold medal at the NCAA Indoor Championships, as she broke the tape in a time of 22.89 seconds on Saturday. She was one of only two runners to eclipse the 23-second mark. Teammate Amberly Nesbitt finished sixth in 23.43 seconds.

The women’s 4×400 meter relay team turned in its best time of the season on Saturday, finishing fourth in 3:34.17. Each of the top four finishers were teams from the Southeastern Conference.

On the men’s side, sprinter Leroy Dixon captured the bronze medal in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds, and took sixth place in the 200 with a time of 21.26 seconds. The men’s 4×400 meter relay team took sixth, stopping the clock in 3:10.18.

The Gamecocks are back in action next week when they host the USC Indoor Invitational. That will be their final tuneup prior to the SEC Indoor Championships.
