With just one week remaining until the season opener and following the first day of fall classes at the University, the South Carolina football team worked out for two hours at the Bluff Road practice fields on Thursday afternoon.

“Decent practice, nothing much happening,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “Some of the hurt guys were jogging around a little bit. The players will have a day off tomorrow, then we start Saturday as if it’s a Monday and hopefully we’ll have a good week of practice and play well.”

The Gamecocks have not yet settled on a placekicker for the opener. “We’re close,” said the Head Ball Coach. “The guy who’s kicking in the front of the line right now is Elliott Fry, a true freshman kid from Texas. He’s been kicking a little bit better than the other guys on extra points and field goals. I’m not sure who the kickoff man will be yet,” noted the Gamecocks’ ninth-year coach.

Coach Spurrier threw out a few accolades for the preseason camp. “A lot of the guys have done well. Our secondary guys have played pretty well I think. Our running backs are running pretty hard. They’ve all done well. Those young linebackers are doing well.”

Coach Spurrier had good things to say about fifth-year defensive end Chaz Sutton, one of just five seniors on this year’s squad, the fewest in Division I football. “Chaz is one of our leaders. You talk about a quiet leader, Chaz does everything the coaches ask. I think he’s already graduated. He’s doing well. He’s ready to go.”

On the injury front, Kadetrix Marcus returned to full practice. Rory “Busta” Anderson (hamstring) practiced in a limited capacity. Players who did not practice or wore yellow jerseys were: Devin Washington (concussion), Jerell Adams (ankle), Carlton Heard (hamstring), James King (foot), Gerald Turner (ankle), Kyle Morini (elbow), Bruce Ellington (hamstring), Cedrick Cooper (elbow), Mike Matulis (shoulder) and Cody Gibson (sprained right knee).

The Gamecocks will enjoy an off day on Friday before returning to the practice fields on Saturday afternoon.
