HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — South Carolina posted a final-round 296 (+12) to earn fourth-place honors at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Sunday at Long Cove Club. The No. 14 Gamecocks finished the 54-hole event with a three-day total of 876 (+24), while Carolina junior Ainhoa Olarra and freshman Ana Pelaez both boasted top-10 showings.

Fifth-ranked Alabama, which shared the 36-hole lead with No. 18 Duke, won the tournament for the second-straight year after carding a three-round mark of 859 (+7). The No. 18 Blue Devils placed second (861, +9), while 10th-ranked Arizona State (865, +13) rounded out the top three. Crimson Tide sophomore Cheyenne Knight captured medalist honors, finishing at 8-under 205.

Olarra and Pelaez both placed in a tie for ninth with a 54-hole total of 218 (+5). Each shot a 3-over 74 in the final round for Carolina, which has finished in the top five at the event in three of the last four years.

Marion Veysseyre carded the low round among Gamecocks Sunday, posting a 1-over 72 to finish in a tie for 14th (219, +6). The sophomore turned in an up-and-down day after totaling four birdies to go with a trio of bogeys. Three of her four birdies came after the turn, with the final one coming on the par-4 18th.

Jia Xin Yang finished in a tie for 53rd with a three-day mark of 228 (+15), while fellow senior Katelyn Dambaugh tied for 56th (229, +16) after her 7-over 78 in round three.

Isidora Nilsson produced her best round of the weekend Sunday, firing an even 71. The sophomore, one of three Gamecocks who competed as an individual, placed in a tie for 27th with a 9-over 222. Senior Marianna Monaco and freshman Anita Uwadia both took home 61st-place honors after totaling a 231 (+18) for the tournament.

Round Changer

Ainhoa Olarra turned in steady play down the stretch of the tournament with pars on 11 of her final 12 holes. Her 38 pars for the week led the Gamecocks.

Notable

  • Carolina’s fourth-place showing was its best at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in six appearances.
  • The Gamecocks have earned top-five finishes in each of their last four tournaments dating back to the 2016 Tar Heel Invitational.
  • Gamecock junior Ainhoa Olarra’s 2.75 par-3 scoring average at Long Cove Club was tied for first in the field.
