No. 13 Women’s Golf at Mason Rudolph Championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sophomore golfer Anita Uwadia posted an opening-round 71 (-1) to pace No. 13 South Carolina on day one of the Mason Rudolph Championship Friday at Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Gamecocks opened the 54-hole event with a 1-over 289 to end round one in a tie for eighth place.

Uwadia turned in her under-par performance after totaling three birdies, two of which came on her front nine. The Okoko, Nigeria, native made the turn at 2-under 34 following birdies on Nos. 3 and 9, and she added another one on the par-4 17th. Uwadia will head into the second round in a tie for 19th.

Gamecock senior Ainhoa Olarra (T24) was steady in her first round of the season, carding an even 72. She earned pars on 16 of 18 holes and registered her lone birdie of the round on the par-3 third. The San Sebastian, Spain, native closed her day with six-straight pars after recording a bogey on No. 12.

Sophomore Lois Kaye Go and junior Marion Veysseyre will enter Saturday’s second round in a tie for 36th after both Gamecocks opened with a 1-over 73. Go, who made her debut for South Carolina Friday, began her round with two-straight bogeys before recovering over her final 16 holes. She shot par or better on each hole during that stretch and added a birdie on the par-4 17th.

Veysseyre saw a strong start to her round with birdies over three of her first four holes. Two bogeys on the front nine resulted in a 1-under 35 for the Lachapelle-Auzac, France, native at the turn, and she ended her day with seven pars over her final nine holes.

Sophomore Ana Pelaez marked the final golfer in action for the Gamecocks. The Malaga, Spain, native notched three birdies on her day and posted a back-nine 36 (E) en route to a 2-over 74. Pelaez will enter round two in a tie for 46th.

Eighth-ranked Arkansas sits atop the leaderboard through 18 holes following its 15-under 273, while Vanderbilt (2nd, -13) and No. 4 Arizona State (3rd, -11) round out the top three. Maria Fassi of the Razorbacks holds the individual lead after posting a first-round 65 (-7).
