Senior diver Julia Vincent broke her own school record in the 1-meter board to highlight the Gamecocks’ first place finish at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational. The Gamecocks hosted UNCW, Wingate and East Carolina in the annual meet on Friday and Saturday, taking first place in both the men’s and women’s competitions. South Carolina won a total of 28 of the 40 events on its way to the win.

Vincent took first in both the 3-meter and 1-meter, breaking her own school record in the 1-meter with a score of 365.75 and will graduate from South Carolina as the school record-holder on both boards

“That score that was just huge,” head diving coach Todd Sherritt said. “It’s not easy to get. It came down to her last dive on the 1-meter, and it was one of the dives we were having problems with. That ended up being the highest scoring dive on her list.”

Emma Barksdale came close to breaking another South Carolina record, swimming the second-fastest 1650 freestyle in school history with a 16:16.53. Barksdale won a total of three events at the meet – the 1650 freestyle, 400 IM and 100 breaststroke.

In the men’s competition, South Carolina got a strong start to the second day with a win in the 200 medley relay. The relay was followed by the 1650 freestyle where South Carolina freshmen Rafael Davila and Tamas Novoszath took first and third, respectively. Another freshman, Grant Summers, earned the Gamecocks two wins at the meet in 1-meter and 3-meter diving.

“Watching our athletes today, I am confident that moving into the championship season, we are ready to do things that this program has never been able to do.It is great to see our races starting to come together at the right time. “Not only was Julia’s record-breaking performance a great note to end on at home, it was a really strong best. All my girls did a phenomenal job this week. It’s right where we are in our training, going into conference and it went perfect, with them and Grant Summers. I was very pleased on a number of levels. I think it’s really important that they get a good boost before they get to the conference level. Everybody achieved that this week; there’s no question about it.

Julia put in two great performances. Objective wise, when you get into a meet and you get that kind of thing coming out of the meet, it’s really a sweet deal. I’m proud of the whole team. I think Yu Qian did a great job today; Karlee Price has had some issues with the back and just dove unbelievably well. She was strong the whole entire time and made a lot of corrections. She did a great job. Grant Summers did some new dives today; he had a great meet on both boards, and he’s just getting better every week.”

UP NEXT FOR CAROLINA

South Carolina will compete again next weekend at the Virginia Tech College Invitational. The meet will kick off on Friday and continue through Sunday in Blacksburg, Va.
