No. 8 Women’s Golf at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — No. 8 South Carolina women’s golf opened play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate Friday, posting a 14-over 298 at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The host Gamecocks, who sit in 13th place, were led by an even 71 from junior Marion Veysseyre.

Veysseyre was steady in round one, registering pars on 16 of her 18 holes. She made the turn at 1-over 37 and notched her lone birdie of the day on the par-5 15th. The Lachapelle-Auzac, France, native, who will enter Saturday’s action in a tie for 10th, closed her round with three-straight pars.

Gamecock sophomore Lois Kaye Go (T32) collected three birdies and posted a first-round 74 (+1). She posted a front-nine 36 (E) before recovering from back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 with birdies on the par-3 13th and par-3 17th. Go shot par or better on each of her final five holes.

Carolina junior Gaby Amos turned in a solid round Friday in place of senior standout Ainhoa Olarra, who is out this weekend with an injury. Amos logged 14 pars, recording one on 10 of her first 11 holes. She sits in a tie for 53rd place after shooting a 5-over 76.

Gamecock sophomores Anita Uwadia and Ana Pelaez both carded a 6-over 77 to end the day in a tie for 67th place. Uwadia boasted a strong finish to her round with a birdie on No. 17 and a par on No. 18, while Pelaez notched her lone birdie of the day on the par-4 12th.

No. 2 Alabama grabbed the 18-hole lead after opening with a 2-over 286. No. 13 Northwestern (287, +3) sits in second, while No. 3 Arkansas (3rd, +6) is four shots off the lead. Arizona State’s Olivia Mehaffey holds the individual lead following her 5-under 66 Friday.

QUOTING COACH Kalen Anderson

“We played really well for most of the day — we just had a stretch there on Nos. 10-12 where we went 8-over. Considering we have Ainhoa out of the lineup, they hung in there really well. It gets really windy out there on the back nine. It’s supposed to be pretty windy the next few days, and if we stay tough we can move up the leaderboard.”

ROUND CHANGER Marion Veysseyre

Marion Veysseyre remained consistent throughout round one, racking up 16 pars and a birdie on No. 15. Her 15 pars Friday led the Gamecocks.

NOTABLE

  • South Carolina’s 3.00 par-3 scoring average Friday ranked second in the 18-team field.
  • The Gamecocks totaled the second-most pars (64) at Long Cove Club in round one.
  • Carolina junior Marion Veysseyre was one of just 14 golfers to shoot par or better in the opening round.
  • Friday marked the first appearance in Carolina’s lineup for Gaby Amos since the 2015 Tar Heel Invitational.
