No. 9 Women’s Golf at Evans Derby Experience

AUBURN, Ala. — Led by senior Ainhoa Olarra‘s 5-under 67, South Carolina women’s golf finished day one of the 2018 Evans Derby Experience in fifth place after carding a first-round 286 (-2) Sunday at the Auburn University Club.

No. 9 Carolina, one of five schools to break par on the opening day of the 54-hole event, will enter Monday’s second round seven shots off the lead.

Olarra was flawless Sunday, totaling 14 pars to go with three birdies and an eagle. She tallied birdies on Nos. 4 and 9 en route to a front-nine 34 (-2) before notching her third birdie of the day on the par-5 12th. The San Sebastian, Spain, native closed her round in style after registering an eagle on No. 16. Olarra (T2) sits three shots off the individual lead.

Marion Veysseyre marked the second Gamecock to break par Sunday, as she fired a 1-under 71. Veysseyre registered a pair of front-nine birdies to make the turn at 2-under 34, and she recovered from bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 with a birdie on the par-3 17th. The junior sits in a tie for 13th through 18 holes of action.

Carolina sophomore Lois Kaye Go (T22) opened the tournament with an even 72. She collected four birdies on her day in a round highlighted by a back-nine 35 (-1). Go closed her day with back-to-back pars following a birdie on No. 16.

Ana Pelaez turned in an up-and-down round for the Gamecocks, shooting a 4-over 76. The Malaga, Spain, native recorded a team-high five birdies and shot par or better on each of her final four holes. Pelaez will head into round two in a tie for 51st.

Fellow Gamecock sophomore Anita Uwadia (T65) opened with a 7-over 79. She finished strong Sunday, carding an eagle on No. 16 before registering pars on her final two holes.

Gaby Amos was also in action for Carolina, competing as an individual. The junior (T71) shot a 9-over 81 in round one.

Florida State sits atop the leaderboard after posting a first-round 278 (-10). No. 3 Arkansas (280, -8) is in second place, and Auburn (285, -3) and No. 5 Duke (285, -3) share third-place honors through one round. Maria Fassi of the Razorbacks holds the individual lead with an 18-hole mark of 64 (-8).

QUOTING COACH Kalen Anderson

“I was very pleased with the way everyone finished their round today ââ’¬” it kept us in the tournament. It’s certainly nice to have Ainhoa back in the lineup. Five under was impressive despite limited practice time due to a strained hip. Marion is playing with a lot of confidence and mental toughness, and Lois looks steady as usual. We have some weather moving in tomorrow, so we need to stay tough the next two days.”

ROUND CHANGER Marion Veysseyre

Ainhoa Olarra posted a bogey-free round Sunday en route to her second-best showing (67) of the season. The senior was one of four golfers in the field to card an eagle, tallying one on No. 16.

NOTABLE

  • The Gamecocks opened a tournament with an under-par performance (286, -2) for the fourth time in their last five outings. Sunday marked Carolina’s 11th round of par or better overall.
