Smith Set to Begin NCAA Quest on Thursday Morning
Sophomore qualified in the 100 free and will also swim the 50 free and 100 fly in Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sophomore Janie Smith will be in the pool on Thursday morning at the 2021 Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She will swim in the prelims of the 50 free thanks to her NCAA B-cut time of 22.38 during the season. Smith just missed qualifying for the sprint race by six hundredths of a second.
The Charlotte, N.C., native is making her first career NCAA Championship appearance this week. She qualified in the 100 free after finishing 10th at the 2021 SEC Championship in Athens. Smith broke the school record in the prelims of the event with a career-best time of 48.69. All-American Christina Lappin held the previous record at 48.95 (2/23/19). Smith will be seeded 35th in the event, which takes place on Saturday.
Smith will also swim the 100 fly on Friday with her B-cut time of 53.61.
