Gamecocks Add Home-and-Home Football Series with North Carolina
Flagship Universities to Renew Rivalry in 2028 and 2029
The two flagship universities of the Carolinas – South Carolina and North Carolina – will renew their rivalry on the gridiron later this decade, as the two schools have inked a home-and-home series to open the 2028 and 2029 seasons, it was announced today.
The Tar Heels will come to Columbia to kick off the 2028 season on Saturday, Sept. 2, then the Gamecocks will make the return trip to Chapel Hill to open the 2029 season on Saturday, Sept. 1. Previously it was announced that the teams will meet at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte to open the 2023 season on Saturday, Sept. 2.
North Carolina leads the all-time series, 35-19-4, holding a 14-10-1 advantage when the game has been played in Columbia, an 18-8-3 lead when the game has been held in Chapel Hill, and a 3-1 advantage when the game has been played at a neutral site.
South Carolina has had the better of it of late, winning three of the last four and six of the last eight meetings between the two schools, dating back to 1988. Carolina has not played in Chapel Hill since posting a 21-15 win in 2007, while the Gamecocks won by a 27-10 margin in 2013, the last time the teams met at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. The last two games between the two squads (2015 and 2019) were held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, with each team winning one.
South Carolina previously announced future home-and-home matchups with Atlantic Coast Conference foes Miami (2026-27), NC State (2030-31) and Virginia Tech (2034-35).
