Vazquez Bas Qualifies for NCAAs in Two Events

Atlanta, Ga. – South Carolina junior diver Manny Vazquez Bas has qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 3-meter and platform dive events, including setting a new school record in the 12-dive platform dive by over 85 points at NCAA Zones this week.
 
In the 3-meter competition, Vazquez Bas placed eighth in the preliminary round with a score of 367.15 to earn his spot in the finals. In the final round, he added 350.60 points to retain his eighth-place position and earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.
 
In the platform dive, Vazquez placed fourth in the preliminary round with a score of 393.15. He added 383.55 points in the finals, again placing fourth, to earn a second event qualification at NCAAs.
 
Vazquez Bas’s 12-dive score of 776.70 in the platform is a new school record. The previous record of 691.55 was set in 2015 by Cole Miller. Vazquez Bas added over 85 points to make his mark in the program record books.  
 
Vazquez earned a bronze medal in the platform dive at the SEC Championships in February, setting a new school record in the process. That record of 403.95 in six dives took down the previous record by nearly 20 points.
 
This will be Vazquez Bas’s first trip to the NCAA Championships. He qualified for the 2020 Championships in both the 3-meter and platform dive events. but the meet was canceled due to the onset of COVID-19.
 
The 2022 Men’s NCAA Championships will take place at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center March 23-26. The 3-meter competition will take place on Friday, March 25, and the platform event will be on Saturday, March 26.
