Podcast: What Makes Juice Wells So Dependable for Gamecock Football?
Anytime Antwane “Juice” Wells Jr. is on the field for the Gamecock football team, he’s one of the SEC’s biggest offensive threats.
The rising senior joined Gamecock Talk to chat about his debut season with South Carolina after transferring from James Madison. A standout wide receiver, Wells quickly became the primary target for quarterback Spencer Rattler and earned All-SEC honors. What does he have planned for year two?
In the Gamecock Talk excerpt below, Wells reflects on his first season with South Carolina, and how the team mindset is changing.
HOST: You were the top receiver for the Gamecocks last year, and then really had some of your best games late in the year when they went on that nice run with the win over Tennessee and Clemson, and obviously the team did great as well.
But what was the difference for you in those games to have such a huge impact?
WELLS: Those last couple weeks we sat down as an offense, and we just thought the teams that we’re playing have more to lose than we do, you know? We were just like, let’s go back to basics, you know, let’s just get the ball to our playmakers in an open field.
That’s what we did. It worked out in our favor. So, sometimes you don’t have to try to dial up everything to be a sweet offense. You can do simple things and let your playmakers make the plays, and then the outcome will be great.
HOST: Feel like this year you guys might be a little bit more of the hunted?
WELLS: I feel like we are still being doubted with certain sources and stuff like that. But I mean, we don’t really look into that. We are just working hard and we are going to continue to prove everybody wrong, and we are going to continue to install this championship mindset around here.
