Bayer, Blake Make Finals on First Day of Invitational

Knoxville, Tenn. – Two of South Carolina’s divers advanced to finals on the first day of action at the Tennessee Diving Invitational. Sophomore Charley Bayer advanced on the men’s 1-meter springboard while freshman Mak Blake made the finals on the women’s 3-meter springboard.

In the men’s competition, Bayer led the group with his trip to the finals. In the prelims Bayer placed second with a 335.15 and completed the competition in 10th place with a 308.20. Both of his scores on the day achieved NCAA Zone qualifying standards.

Also in the prelims, freshmen Max Spencer and Tyler Hoard finished in 18th and 29th place respectively. Spencer scored a 285.80 while Hoard scored a 240.00.

All three men teamed up in the team diving event to combine for a score of 329.00, landing them in fifth place.

In the women’s 3-meter competition, Blake led the group, placing 12th in both the preliminary and final rounds. In the first round Blake scored a 263.05 and in the finals she scored of 222.05.

Also in the prelims, junior Blair Isenhour placed 24th with a 235.25, freshman Aislinn Zuechner placed 28th with a 210.45, and graduate Josie Matalone placed 31st with a 171.15. The competition was a career first for Zuechner who missed the fall semester due to injury.

The Tennessee Diving Invitational will continue on Thursday with women’s platform event, men’s 3-meter event, and women’s team event. All events will run simultaneously with the competition beginning at 11:30 a.m. Live stats will be available on Dive Meets and streaming will be on the SEC Network+.
